Join us for “National Day of Prayer” on May 1
You’re invited to come pray with us! The Reading Room will be participating in the National Day of Prayer on May 1, 2025, from 11:00 am to 6:00pm, and you’re invited to join us in prayer for the betterment of our community, country and the world.
First, this day has deep roots in the history of the United States that you may find interesting. Here’s a quick overview:
- The first National Day of Prayer was held in 1775 when the Continental Congress proclaimed “a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer” to be created.
- In 1863, during the Civil War, Lincoln signed a congressional resolution that made April 30 a day of fasting and prayer.
- In 1952, the National Day of Prayer was co-founded by Congress and signed into law by President Truman.
- In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan. The first Thursday of May was designated as the National Day of Prayer. Each year since, the President of the United States has declared the first Thursday of May as the National Day of Prayer.
Here’s a look at what we have planned in our Reading Room that day:
The Reading Room will have extended hours from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to join us in observing National Prayer Day – we hope you bring your family and join in. We will be open for a place for members and friends, as well as the general public, to come in and devote time to praying or deepening their understanding of prayer. As Christian Scientists, we value prayer to God because it brings answers, and we want to share how much this means to us.
Twice during the day, at noon and again at 5:00 p.m., anyone in the Reading Room will be invited to participate in about 90 seconds of silent prayer, followed by reciting / praying the Lord’s Prayer aloud together. Our hope is that all visitors, even those of another faith, will feel embraced and included. Silent prayer allows everyone to participate in communing with God without feeling there is a prescribed method of prayer we are trying to promote. Following silent prayer, we will share a prayer integral to Christian Science – the Lord’s Prayer. It is a beautiful prayer that many know and respect. Everyone will be invited to recite it with us, or if they prefer, they can just listen.
Afterwards, our guests may enjoy some refreshments. Some may want to continue praying, or some may want to look around or ask questions. Everyone is welcome to stay as long as they want. We hope people from the community will notice our banner in front of the church and feel encouraged to join us.
As a follow-up, everyone visiting the Reading Room will also be invited to our Wednesday Evening Testimony Meeting on May 7th, following the National Day of Prayer, to share their inspirations from the National Day of Prayer, how they found comfort in this activity, or listen to others who may testify about how their experiences were answered by praying.
Many Blessings to All…
